Wolverine: Prodigal Son- Logan's Gone Emo!!!Review by: Xander VillanuevaWritten by: Antony JohnstonArt by: Wilson TortosaPublisher (US): Del Rey MangaPublisher (Japan): KodanshaWith the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it seems that everyone wants to cash in on the popular Canadian mutant. Surprisingly, Del Rey Manga has jumped on the band wagon with an original English manga entitled Wolverine: Prodigal Son. However, if you are looking for the surly, cigar-chomping, adamantium-boned James Howlett, you will be sadly disappointed.Wolverine: Prodigal Son is a complete re-imagining of the classic Marvel character, Wolverine. It is missing the detailed back-story, his days being in Weapon X, the adamantium skeleton, and the Marvel 616 Universe. What is left is an angst-ridden teen with too many complaints about life. In Anthony Johnston's world, Logan is a student at the Quiet Earth School for Young People in Canada (no relation to the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning For Young People). Abandoned as a baby, Logan is the most skilled student at the school and is shown to have developed his mutant talents. With typical teen angst and confusion, Logan begins his journey to discover his origins and seek redemption for horrible events, which occur throughout the first volume. Essentially, this is a typical Wolverine story minus the brutality and familiar characters, but with more teenage antics. The good thing is that you do not need to be familiar with the characters or Logan, as this is geared towards new readers.
