Subdued Fangirling
05/17/2012 07:25 PM UTCKimi to Boku. 2 Episode 6 & 7--Talkin' 'Bout Real Love >>
Between my computer randomly breaking down and school being school, I didn't have time to get last week's post out. So this week is a double post instead! Thankfully, both of these episodes deal with a similar theme...love! Also, a free internet to whoever correctly guesses what I'm referencing in the title.
Episode 6
When Kayo was first introduced last season, I wasn't sure where this relationship would end up. The show is still a bit ambiguous about her age (personally, I guessing she's in her mid-twenties), but this episode made it clear that she is old enough for it to make a difference in how she sees Yuki. She treats him like a friend and is clearly aware of his crush... but leaves it at that.
This episode also makes it vague whether she returns his feelings or not, but either way, I liked how she handled the situation. She knows that Yuki's life is just beginning, and that a lot of things change once you leave high school. She's got her life to live and he'll have his own soon enough. I found it sweet that she cared about him enough to try and teach him about how life changes, regardless of whether or not she likes him back.
Two episodes ago, I complained a lot about Yuki's laziness. Because of that episode, he's now my least favorite of the bunch. I don't find his lack of motivation funny like I did in the last season. Now it's just boring. However, the fact that this season has made a big deal out of Yuki's laziness up until this point worked in this episode's favor. He finally does something!
I was pleasantly surprised that when he heard the news that his crush won't be working at the school anymore he didn't become even more apathetic. Instead, he put himself to work to get her the plate that he'd been working towards all this time. If only he could be like this more often... Well, they do say that love can bring out the best in us. Overall, this was a pretty sweet episode despite focusing on an unrequited crush.
Episode 7
This episode had a lot more going on in it, particularly because the show has been building up to this moment for a while. I was honestly expecting that Chizuru's confession to Mary would happen towards the end of the season, if at all, but once again I'm pleasantly surprised. The setup for this episode was pretty similar to what we've seen before, but I had a much easier time empathizing with Mary than I have in the past.
However, a lot of that has to do with her reaction to Chizuru. She's definitely been softening up to him throughout this season, although she didn't answer his confession. She's been crushing on Shun for a while, so it's going to take some time to work her feelings out. I found it interesting that her "revelation" for the episode was that she hadn't thought about Shun rejecting her before. Up until this point, it had always appeared to me that Mary's actions (and sometimes inaction) were fueled by the fear of rejection. Now that it's been established that she acted that way without even really understanding why... well, maybe I've been a little too hard on Mary. This paints her more as someone who's slowly learning how to deal with a new emotion (love), which is something that I can relate to.
As for the other characters... Chizuru was absolutely adorable in this episode, and I'm really happy for him that he was able to confess his feelings. Even better, he doesn't seem to expect anything by saying it; he's just happy that he was able to say it. Of course, I hope that Mary does eventually return his feelings, but this is far more progress than I expected, so I'll take it as it is. Also, the scene where he ran away yelling was pure gold. I challenge the next rom-com anime I watch to top that.
I was also really surprised that Shun got confessed to, but I guess I should've seen something like that coming with the episode's focus on Mary and Valentine's Day. I thought that some sort of misunderstanding would happen, but nope. She really did confess to him. And Shun let her down in a really nice way too. What a gentleman (even though the show doesn't regularly treat him as such...).
Anyway, I am extremely happy that Kimi to Boku has gone back to what it does best, romantic relationships. Hopefully it will stick with this subject for the rest of the season, since there are plenty of characters whose love subplots have yet to be resolved (*cough*Kaname*cough*). I'm still specifically hoping for a reconciliation between Yuta and his former girlfriend since she showed up in this episode, but honestly I'll take anything on the level of these two episodes. Don't let me down, Kimi to Boku!
Current tally: Five (5) Episode(s) without Shun in drag, four (4) consecutive, one (1) where he does not appear at all.

That’s one dang smile there. Finally, we moved a base from this relationship. Now this is an interesting episode. Every time we deal with Mary, a lot of things happen. It shakes the foundations of Chi-chan and Shu. With Shu getting the first love treatment and Chi-chan finally making its intentions known. This also rocks [...]

I love Valentines Episodes :3 AND this episode has got to be one of the best episodes of Kimi to Boku this season. The long wait for the next episode of Chizuru x Masaki sure wasn’t for nothing :3 I was actually expecting this episode to be a entire episode devoted to showing Chizuru and [...]

It’s hard to tell where Sakamichi no Apollon 5 is going at first. We get a few scenes where the coincidences distract from their purpose. Kaoru just happens to be playing telephone-on-a-string with Sachiko, bringing up the fact that Ritsuko now hates him, when she passes by and takes the can from Sachiko. Sentarou just [...]

Episode: Kimi to Boku Episode 6
I’m lately a bit off with my summer cold so my posting aren’t as frequent as they used to. I also haven’t watch much anime lately since I was pre-occupied with reading a certain manga that I will eventually review after. But at least, Kimi to Boku pulled an interesting development. If you had watched [...]

“My brother, whose sole interest is manga, has taken a surprisingly interest in the curly-haired Cinderella of the cafeteria. Since then, his ‘same old, same old’ days had started becoming more eventful.” I was really surprised to see myself actually liking this episode. Last season, Yuki and cafeteria girl’s episode has got to be the [...]

For some reasons, this episode just didn’t became that interesting at all. The story featured this time was pretty boring. Good thing the 3 funniest guys in the shows stayed. HA! And I actually expected Kaname to pick Yuta to go with him. The first part of the episode was pretty funny. When Yuki and [...]

If Hyouka stays the same as it was in episode 2 I see viewers getting bored with it quickly. I can’t blame them, but I’m not one of them. This was one of the laziest episodes of anything I’ve seen in a while. Not lazy like slice-of-life shows Kimi to Boku or Acchi Kocchi, where [...]

Kimi to Boku
Once again, a one-episode character carries the show.
While I wouldn't describe Kimi to Boku as an episodic show, I definitely don't mind when it decides to take the focus off the main group and follow around someone else's point of view for a while. I especially welcome that tactic this week, since last time the show proved that the main characters can get pretty boring without some outside stimulus.
This week's character (who I'm assuming that we'll probably never see again) is Akihiro, a third year high-school student, who kind of reminds me of Shun's younger brother from the first season in that he's more of an average guy as compared to the characters we're normally hanging out with on this show. He takes a rather realistic reaction to the group's general messing around, even though it was revealed that his frustration was tied up in other issues as well.
Despite his insistence that he was putting himself through cram school and studying on New Year's just to get into a certain college for his girlfriend, there was a feeling that something else had happened in their relationship that wasn't fully explained. Perhaps they'd argued about Akihiro's decision? Did they break up because most likely they were going to separate schools? Or was getting into the same college a per-condition for dating? I'm guessing based off of the text Akihiro receives at the end, which says "We should go out," which could either be a faulty Crunchyroll translation or that Akihiro just didn't want to talk about something that personal with some younger guys he'd only just met.
Either way, the theme of time passing was a good choice for this episode. It's a new year, a fresh start, yet all Akihiro can think about is how he's running out of time. Akihiro just wants to get to the cram school, and, by extension, to the school where his girlfriend will be. However, random circumstances in this episode keep sidetracking him and he starts to wonder if it's all futile. However, something as simple as sending a New Year's card to his girlfriend inspires him to keep going despite not knowing how things will turn out.
Some of Akihiro's thoughts appear to rub off on Shun as well, since he suddenly becomes aware that this might be the group's final year together. Despite their general aimlessness, time marches on in Kimi to Boku, and I would like to see this developed more throughout the season. I remember the feeling myself when I reached the end of high school; I had a group of really good friends, and life after high school seemed like a dark pit of unknown factors that I didn't--or wouldn't--know how to deal with. But like Akihiro, I kept going ahead anyway, and Shun and Co. will have to come to realize this as well. It would make a nice plotline for the season without having to abandon the random antics or the well-done romance, but given this series' allergy to overarching plots so far, I'm not sure if this one will be embraced.
Current tally: Three (3) Episode(s) without Shun in drag, two (2) consecutive, one (1) where he does not appear at all.

Well now, are they referencing Love Hina here? I can’t say its a moving episode by Kimi to Boku standards. What we have is a K-On episode where nothing gets done. The senior never got to his destination, never had much study time and the gang never had a chance to pray in the shrine. [...]
